What To Look For in the Best Dehumidifiers for Crawl Spaces

You probably already know why you need a good crawl space dehumidifier – they prevent mold and mildew, make the air healthier and more pleasant for you, your family and even your pets, can protect your house’s structure and prevent wood rot, they can rid your home of termites and other vermin and a lot more.

But what exactly do you need to look for in your new crawl space dehumidifier? Here’s a basic list of features and considerations I think are the most important:

Size and Coverage

This is an area where a lot of people do a lot of worrying and complex calculation, making sure they are getting a dehumidifier that is big enough and will be effective for their crawl space.

But really it doesn’t have to be that difficult, and there’s little to worry about. The dehumidifiers I’ll include here are absolutely fine for even larger crawl spaces, and perfect for any average home, so you’re sure to get the power and effectiveness you need.

Features

Again, we can go into a lot of detail here, and there are definitely certain features you are going to want and need, but you can be sure that the best companies know this even better than you and I, and the recommendations I’m making here will have all of the most important and useful features – including:

  • Humidistat – a sensor which monitors the humidity in the space, making sure the area is getting dry enough and also ensuring optimal running and energy efficiency and cost savings.
  • Condensate Removal – this is the process of removing the water your new dehumidifier collects while working, which can be achieved either by a good gravity-drain system or an electric motor and pumping system.

If you have a dehumidifier upstairs, it’s easy enough to do this yourself, just emptying a tray, but you don’t want to crawl under your house a couple of times a day, so a self-emptying system is important.

  • Filtration System – good dehumidifiers will filter out particles and dust, making the air healthier and also increasing the life and effectiveness of the machine itself.
  • Auto-Restart – in case of power outages – after all, big storms often bring big humidity! – a good dehumidifier should restart when power returns, and even remember all your settings.
  • Defrosting – crawl spaces can get very cold, regularly even below freezing, and this can really damage your new dehumidifier – especially the condensation coils. So it is ultra-important to get a crawl space dehumidifier that keeps the interior of the machine warm, and also has frost sensors so it can initiate shutdown if the temperature drops too low.

Price and Running Costs

Again, some of the best choices you can make in dehumidifiers are not necessarily the most expensive ones, and indeed price is not always an indication of quality or effectiveness.

That’s why it is helpful to have some real-world experience, and you can rest assured that all of my picks, whether premium or budget, will offer amazing value for the money.

As far as running costs go, even in continuous operation all of the recommended models below will have very low energy usage – and, to be fair, this is really true of almost any decent crawl space dehumidifier.

Brands

There are a few brands of dehumidifiers I know and love, companies I really trust and have had incredibly good experiences with. Perhaps unsurprisingly, these are also the same companies which have gained respect and acknowledgement in the industry, and are the most popular and highly rated among customers.

While even the very best dehumidifiers for crawl spaces don’t need to be expensive, it is still a bit of an investment – and an investment in your home and your health – so it makes sense to get a good product from a good company.

Who Makes the Best Crawl Space Dehumidifier?

The last category in the previous section leads us to the question of the day – which dehumidifier, from which company, should you buy?

In my experience, there are a few very good companies making excellent crawl space dehumidifiers, units which do exactly what they are supposed to do effectively, quietly, reliably and automatically, with a minimum of fuss and exceptionally low levels of maintenance or intervention.

Brands like AlorAir, BaseAire, Abestorm and Colzer are currently making the best dehumidifiers you can get – and have, in fact, for years and years – and will always be good, safe bets and wonderful choices.

This is an important decision – I want to make absolutely certain that any product you choose from my buyer’s guide to the best dehumidifiers for home crawl spaces will really work, be reliable and offer amazing value for your money.

After all, you may be putting a lot of thought and effort into making sure you make the right choice, but once you’ve gotten your new dehumidifier you should be able to just forget all about it, quietly and effectively working under your feet to protect your home and family for years and years to come.

At a Glance:

  • Dehumidifying Power: 70 PPD (pints per day)
  • Maximum Effective Space: 4,500 Square Feet

The Colzer 70 pint dehumidifier isn’t just the least expensive dehumidifier I would recommend for crawl spaces – it is that, though, and a remarkably inexpensive machine given its power and quality.

But more than that, it is a Colzer, which means it is designed and made by one of the best companies going, a company that really understands dehumidifiers and exactly what we need in our homes.

This is easy to see in how quietly the Colzer 70 pint dehumidifier runs and how powerful it is, as much as in the intelligent design, including a clear, simple and truly useful control panel and monitoring display and the efficient gravity-feed self-emptying water reservoir.

The Colzer 70 is, for all that, not the ideal dehumidifier for crawl spaces – it is actually designed for in-home use, with a much more attractive tower design. It is also not powerful enough for the most humid conditions, or for recovering from floods or real water damage.

On the other hand, if you live in a drier climate and want a medium use dehumidifier for the crawl space, which you can also bring up into the house during less humid times and use in other ways (the clothes-drying function is brilliant), this inexpensive unit really is ideal.

The Colzer 70 pint per day dehumidifier is an amazing product for the money, and highly recommended for smaller spaces, less humid climates and conditions and more general household use.

  • Maximum Effective Space: 1,200 Square Feet

Though my choices for best crawl space dehumidifiers run up to nearly 2,300 dollars, my best overall pick is actually quite inexpensive.

The surprisingly affordable AlorAir Sentinel 55 113 pint dehumidifier is optimized for crawl space use, with a design meant to be either hung from floor joists or set on the ground – including adjustable feet – and an effective self-draining gravity fed hose.

It is also great for crawl spaces simply because it is powerful – with a conservative rating of up to 113 pints of water removal a day, the Sentinel 55 can handle even damp conditions and highly humid climates. The all-metal construction and heavy duty components really reflect its industrial quality, and the Sentinel can stand up to even harsh conditions.

A truly commercial grade product at a consumer-level price, the AlorAir Sentinel 55 dehumidifier can run continuously for years and years, with quiet operation, no problems or interruptions and even automatic defrosting for colder climates and seasons. The unit will automatically restart after power outages, and even remember your exact settings.

The control panel is easy enough for anybody to understand and use, and you can even get an optional AlorAir Remote Control for adjustments and monitoring.

A great basic crawl space dehumidifier at a low price, the AlorAir Sentinel 55 is an amazing value, and highly recommended.

This is a bit of a cheat, in that pretty much all of my choices for best crawl space dehumidifiers are designed to be easy to use – in fact, most of the dehumidifiers out there, good or bad, are fairly straightforward.

But maybe I just wanted to include the BaseAire AirWerx 55 because it is such a great dehumidifier overall – in fact, a strong contender for the AlorAir Sentinel above for Best Overall.

With high water removal capability, automatic water drainage, automatic shutdown and restart and a reliable memory to recall your precise settings, a heavy duty frame and internal components and even automatic defrosting, the AirWerx 55 definitely ticks all the boxes, and is one of the finest products you can get for the money.

But it is also, in my experience at least, the easiest to use – again, not that much different than others, but the clear and simple control panel, the super-easy to access and change internal filter, and the really nice optional BaseAir Remote Control make this dehumidifier a joy to use.

It is also a powerful industrial grade dehumidifier, optimized for crawl spaces, meant for reliable continuous use and including a five year manufacturer’s warranty – you can’t lose!

✅ Pros❌ Cons
Powerful and EffectiveSlightly More Expensive than the AlorAire – though still a great val

I come back to Colzer, one of my favorite companies, for a crawl space dehumidifier that is really great for very large spaces.

In fact, the AlorAire and BaseAire dehumidifiers above are plenty powerful enough for even larger crawl spaces, and all that most people need – and, I want to say, also come from two of my favorite companies!

But for very large spaces or more difficult situations – high humidity or wet conditions, or even damage control – the very powerful Colzer 212 pint crawl space dehumidifier is the answer. Not just for homes, either – if you need a dehumidifier for a commercial site, like beneath a store, restaurant or office space, this is a great choice.

And really, while a bit more than the household use machines above, this is still a very inexpensive unit – especially for the performance and overall quality. That said, I would not get this simply because it is stronger and only a couple hundred bucks more – it won’t really offer an advantage to most people in domestic applications, and will cost a bit more to run as well.

With all of the features you want and need – auto-restart, automatic defrost, a clear and intuitive control panel and even a built-in water drainage pump – this is a very well designed dehumidifier. It is also very well made, and suitable for even the most demanding commercial and industrial applications.

A powerful dehumidifier for very damp, humid conditions and especially for larger spaces, the Colzer 212 pint dehumidifier is an easy choice, and a well made, reliable, hard working product – strongly recommended!

For home crawl spaces that suffer from higher levels of damp and humidity, or for more muggy, humid climates, you may need a more powerful and effective dehumidifier, and the BaseAire AirWerx 100X is the best one I’ve found.

While clearly built for demanding industrial conditions, with its very heavy duty construction and tough components, the 100X is also made to be very easy to use, and suitable for any home user.

This means that not only will the BaseAire AirWerx 100X automatically monitor humidity, and turn on and off as needed, it will also auto-restart after a power outage or any interruption, will keep its internal components warm and frost-free, it automatically removes collected water with its built-in condensate pump, and it has a very clear and easy to use control panel.

But, more than any of my previous recommendations, the AirWerx 100X is extra powerful, with the ability to remove an impressive 220 pints of water a day – suitable for even water damaged homes, very damp conditions and the most humid climates.

As well made as any BaseAire product – which is saying a lot! – the 100X is rough and dependable, and will work for years and years without trouble or maintenance, as evidenced by the 5 year warranty.

You can also get a nice optional BaseAire Remote Control, for adjustments and condition monitoring from above.

The best home use crawl space dehumidifier I’ve used for especially high humidity and high dampness situations, the BaseAire AirWerx 100X is well made, easy to use and very, very effective!

I’ve already included at least one great dehumidifier for commercial and industrial use – especially for larger areas – in the Colzer 212 pint dehumidifier above. And really almost any of these rugged and reliable products would be a suitable choice.

But for real industrial and commercial applications, where you want and need the most power, the highest levels of effectiveness and power, and a really rugged build that will take some abuse, the Abestorm SNS 120 dehumidifier is my favorite.

If you don’t know, Abestorm is a very well known and highly respected company among professional contractors, restoration and water damage experts, and they make products ranging from smaller domestic dehumidifiers to very large full industrial units – all made to the highest standards in terms of materials, construction quality and reliability, and performance.

And their SNS 120 is not just a great example of Abestorm quality, but more than that it is maybe the best value I’ve found in a fully commercial crawl space dehumidifier.

It has very high water removal rates – up to 235 pints per day at 90 degrees fahrenheit and 90 percent humidity – and still is very compact and easy to move around – as well as easy to disassemble for cleaning and filter replacement.

With automatic restart and a built in condensate pump, the Abestorm SNS 120 is as convenient as any consumer / domestic use machine, but is a highly overbuilt, efficient and powerful industrial dehumidifier suitable for all but the very biggest jobs, and with a full five year warranty to back it up.

✅ Pros❌ Cons

Conclusion: Which Crawl Space Dehumidifier is Best for You and Your Home?

For me, this question has one obvious answer – the ALORAIR Sentinel 55, which is my pick for best crawl space dehumidifier overall.

The Sentinel 55 is perfectly designed for both total beginners and more experienced DIYers and even contractors, is very well made, reliable and quiet running, uses very little power and should last for many, many years – and it works beautifully!

Of course, if you want a more budget choice (though the Sentinel 55 is a great value), or if you have specific needs – like very high humidity or water damage, or very large spaces – there are lots of other great choices in this list of the top crawl space dehumidifiers.

But for 99 percent of homeowners, who have high humidity – in the summer or all year long – and who want to bring it under control and protect their home, their possessions and their family, the AlorAir Sentinel 55 is a great choice, and more than you will ever need.
