Sometimes I’m a little skeptical about certain products, and this was definitely the case when it came to electric cooling blankets. Recently, though, I had the opportunity to try a few of them, and I have to say that I’m now a believer – in fact, I was pretty much blown away at how well they work and how effective they are!

So let’s look at the different electric cooling blankets on the market today, to hopefully find the best choices and help you decide which one is best for you.

What Is an Electric Cooling Blanket?

You are probably already familiar with electric heated blankets, which simply use a heating element – specifically wires that run through the blanket’s fabric – to heat the blanket to a toasty, but safe, temperature, and keep you warm all through the night.

An electric cooling blanket is also a very clever idea, and a very effective product, but works in a very different way.

In the case of an electric cooling blanket, there is a pump which blows cool air into your bedding, to keep you cool when you’re sleeping – or, even more importantly for some of us – while you’re trying to fall asleep.

Another system uses water instead of air, with a specially designed blanket/mattress pad which circulates the cooled water throughout your sleep zone.

Premium choices will be both a heating and cooling blanket, with either warm or cool air or water, and given that there are not electric wires or electricity running through the bedding many people prefer these to standard electric heated blankets – and many people think they work much faster and much better, providing more even heat and greater comfort.

We will also look at a much less expensive bargain choice – a smaller and simpler water cooling system without heat or other fancy options. It may not be as effective, or offer winter warming, but still works great and might be a great option if you’re on a budget.

The fact that this Anni Star mattress cooling pad is more than a thousand dollars less than my top pick on this list of best electric cooling blankets may be reason enough to choose it.

But it is also a very well designed and effective product, that really helps people get relief from heat and hot flashes and get a good night’s sleep.

Believe me, there are a lot of similarly priced products that look the same and seem to do the same thing, but the Anni Star is so much better in terms of material quality and build quality, and is infinitely more effective. Well, maybe not infinitely – except when you consider that some of the “bargain” choices don’t work at all!

A simple evaporative cooler design, the Anni Star cools water which is circulated through a high quality organic cotton mattress pad, which in turn keeps your bedding and your body cool and comfortable all night long.

There’s a removable and easily cleanable filter for keeping the water nice, a basic but functional remote control, and really that’s about it – it runs quietly and cools you down while you’re falling asleep and sleeping – or any time you need it. No heating, no smartphone app, no dual zones or individual controls, just a small (39 x 75 inch) and very effective cooling pad for a single sleeper.

I call this a great budget choice, but I do realize that it is not cheap – well, maybe compared to my other choices… – but given the effectiveness, the quality of the parts and the way it looks and feels, it is clearly a real value.

Of the four premium electric cooling blankets I’ve included in this buyer’s guide, this SleepMe Dock Pro Sleep System is the only one I haven’t tried, so I can’t really give a first hand report.

I can say that SleepMe makes some pretty bold claims, saying that their system has “nearly 2x the cooling power than previous systems.” Another paragraph on their website says that the Dock Pro has 5x more cooling power than previous models.

It’s not made clear which of these seemingly contradictory claims is true, or if they both are, and It also isn’t made clear if they are comparing with their own previous systems or with the existing competition, but there you go.

This remarkable improvement in cooling is said to be due to the new membrane’s “increased temperature-regulating surface area” – this is apparently referring to the special blanket through which the heated or cooled water is distributed.

I know I’m sounding a bit dubious here, but again I haven’t actually tried the SleepMe Dock Pro, and it might be the best of the best for all I know! It did win a 2023 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) Innovation Award, so it might really be all that.

What I do know, though, is that it is by far the most expensive premium cooling blanket on our list, and the others I’ve tried (which, to be fair, are not exactly inexpensive) work wonderfully well, and can be warmly recommended.

But the 1,600 dollar question: would I recommend the SleepMe Dock Pro Sleep System? Well, until I can sleep on it, I’ll have to sleep on it – for now I will officially take a wait-and-see position and get back to you.

Best Air-Based Electric Cooling Blanket 

BedJet 3 Cooling and Heating Climate Control for Beds (Dual Zone King Size)

Although I was working with mostly published specifications, manufacturing claims and my own reactions when reviewing the SleepMe Dock Pro (just above), I actually had the chance to try this BedJet 3 air-based climate control system, at least for a few glorious minutes, and I have to say that I was quite impressed!

I didn’t actually spend the night with the BedJet 3, but was able to lay under the ultra-soft and comfortable Cloud Sheet (the “blanket” itself, through which warm or cool air is blown) and had a good opportunity to see how it feels, how it sounds and how it works.

As far as ambient noise goes, the BedJet was pretty much unnoticeable. I am sensitive to noise, and I am sure that the level of sound generated by the control unit would not bother me or interrupt my sleep.

And the feeling of this system is great. Not only is the (100 percent cotton) Cloud Sheet soft and comfortable just as a sheet, it becomes even more cushiony and nice when it’s working, although I did not detect any air movement or physical feeling from the operation at all – another thing which definitely could bug me and my sleep.

In fact, all I noticed – besides the luxurious feeling of softness – was an immediate change in temperature. I make sure to say “immediate” for a couple of reasons – one, people who have trouble falling asleep want and need the right temperature right now, and two, people who use this blanket for other reasons – say, people suffering from hot flashes – also want and need immediate relief.

The BedJet 3 seems just ideal for all of those people, and by all accounts, the warmth and cooling are consistent and relieving all night long. In fact, there’s even a smartphone app which allows you to customize the warming or cooling temperatures hour by hour throughout the night!

This is not an inexpensive product, but the overall quality and premium look and feel alone assure me that you won’t be wasting your money. Factor in not just the comfort and relief you’ll feel, and how much better you will sleep, but also the money you can save by turning down the heater or AC, and this is a very good and smart investment – and a nice bit of justifiable luxury!

ChiliSleep Cube System Cooling and Heating Mattress Pad Dual Zone King Size

The main competition for the wonderful BedJet 3 (reviewed just above) are the two water-based systems by ChiliSleep – the Ooler (just below) and this less expensive ChiliSleep Cube Sleep System.

Luckily I also had the opportunity to try these systems as well, and they’re both pretty wonderful too – in fact, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the three, to the point that choosing might be a bit difficult!

ChiliSleep makes the decision a little easier, though – by all indications, this Cube cooling/heating system is on the way out, to be supplanted by the Ooler. The Ooler is far more advanced and feature-rich, performs a bit better, and is really about the same price, so do the math…

Still, my experience with this ChiliSleep Cube was all positive. The cooling and heating maybe did not kick in as quickly as they did with the BedJet 3, but were still quite quick, and should provide pretty much instant relief for people who need it.

And while the system is different – it uses water, and you lay on the heating/cooling blanket rather than under it – the same kind of deep, complete feeling of ideal temperature was obvious the whole time I used it. In fact, if anything, the temperature and the overall experience with the Cube was even better.

The softness of the BedJet 3’s Cloud Sheet and the slightly lower noise its control unit makes might push me in that direction, but I do tend to think the water-based process used by ChiliSleep is a tad bit more effective and more consistent.

That said, I would rather spend a bit more money and opt for the better performing and more sophisticated ChiliSleep Ooler over this ChiliSleep Cube.Pros:

And so here we are, at my top choice overall – the ChiliSleep Ooler Sleep System, and what a system it is!

Everything I liked in the older ChiliSleep Cube system and in the BedJet 3 are just as nice here, or even better, and there’s a lot more to love as well.

For one thing, I think the control unit of the Ooler must be the quietest of the three – I could not even detect it unless I really turned my attention to it, and even then it was insignificant. And even on the lowest “silent” setting the temperature control was great.

The instantaneous heating and cooling I noticed with the BedJet is even quicker and stronger here, at least when using the “boost” speed setting, which seems to work very, very fast. It also felt to me like the Ooler has better and more consistent temperature control overall, more stable and more evenly distributed.

I especially like the UV water cleaning / purifying system – though I obviously wasn’t around long enough to witness how it inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi, that’s just the kind of thing that makes me feel better – and sleep better – and it shows how much thought and meaningful refinement they’ve put into this new electric cooling blanket.

The smartphone app is nice, although I would have liked to see better WiFi compatibility – specifically Google Assistant or Alexa voice controls. Temperatures and cycles are very precisely controllable, and the controls on the base unit are very simple, but easy to see and use and sufficient for basic adjustments.

So again, the ChiliSleep Ooler seems to have it all – fast, stable and very effective heating and cooling, great physical comfort, great controls and user interface, intelligent water cleaning system, a nice phone app with custom cycles and schedules and the wonderful “Warm Awake” feature (but then I do despise alarm clocks!) and so much more that I haven’t even gotten into.

It is also clearly a very well made unit, which should provide years of trouble-free service.

While I think any of the three premium electric cooling and heating blankets I’ve actually gotten a chance to try out would be a fine choice for anybody who wants to sleep better and more comfortably – and a necessary choice for anybody who really struggles with falling asleep or getting a good night’s rest – this ChiliSleep Ooler is the best of them, and the best value as well.

Conclusion: Are Electric Cooling Blankets Worth the Money?

 I know that these are pricey products – the four premium choices are all north of a thousand dollars in dual-zone king size – but for me they are worth every penny.

And yeah, the budget choice too, even with its small size, limited range and somewhat lower performance, are still quite effective, and well worth the money – they work great and will really offer relief and improved sleep.

But getting back to the premium choices, the three products I was able to test, from BedJet and ChiliSleep, are all very well made, with a premium look and feel, excellent material and build quality and intelligent design and user interfaces – everything seems to be thought of and in place.

They are also all three very, very effective – as I said in the beginning, I was a bit dubious that such a thing as a cooling blanket could possibly be a good idea, or an effective item, but now I’m fully converted.

In fact, I not only think they are great for significantly reducing temperature when you sleep, and providing great relief from the heat, but they are more effective in heating – and somehow just nicer feeling – than almost any electric blanket I’ve tried.

So in terms of effectiveness, usability, overall quality and the way they feel, there is no doubt these are reasonably priced products. But to me – maybe because I sometimes have trouble sleeping because of heat – the relief, and the good sleep they will provide, make any of them an absolute steal!

I do prefer the ChiliSleep Ooler overall, and think it is – for many reasons – easily the best of the three (and not that much more expensive), but any of them would be a great choice – and a great way to take care of yourself.
