Are you spending too much money on heating your home?

Or, do you have a single room or space which needs additional heating?

These are great reasons to consider installing a propane wall heater.

Why should I buy a propane wall heater?

Your central furnace may be doing an adequate job heating your house, but it is an expensive system, and every year fuel prices seem to be getting higher and higher.

But a propane wall heater can help. Rather than heat your entire house – with all of the expense that incurs – why not turn down your money-hungry furnace and just heat the room or rooms you actually spend your time in with a propane wall heater instead?

Propane heaters offer the most efficient source of heat available, and they are exceptionally effective in heating even larger areas. Plus, they are safe and easy to use, and if you are an intrepid DIYer you can even install a propane wall heater yourself.

What are the advantages of propane heaters?

Propane wall heaters are affordable and cost-effective, but that is just the beginning – they offer lots of other benefits as well, including:

  • Propane is up to 99.9% efficient
  • Propane releases approximately 2.5 times the heating energy of natural gas
  • Unlike natural gas, propane heaters don’t need gas lines built into your house
  • Most propane heaters also don’t require electricity
  • Propane is clean burning
  • Propane heat, and propane heaters, will save you money by selectively heating only a part of your house, giving your central heating system, and your wallet, a break

Which is better – a vented propane heater or a ventless propane heater?

There are two basic types of propane wall heaters – ventless (or vent-free), and vented (or direct-vent).

Basically, ventless heaters do not need or use outside air at all. They consume oxygen from the room they’re in and exhaust any fumes into the same room.

This is a concern to some people, who worry that ventless wall heaters may make the room’s air usage, but in fact, propane is such an efficient fuel that there are very little if any noxious emissions from a well-made ventless propane wall heater and they will also have sensors to monitor air quality and oxygen levels, automatically shutting down if they detect anything unsafe.

Although not everybody agrees, ventless propane heaters are widely considered to be completely safe to use inside your home, and are legal and allowed in most places – with the notable exceptions, in North America, of Canada and the state of California.

They offer some distinct advantages over vented propane heaters:

  • Ventless propane heaters are easier to install
  • Ventless propane heaters don’t require duct, chimneys or any other outside venting, making them even more energy efficient
  • Ventless propane heaters are substantially less expensive than their vented counterparts

Vented, or direct-vent, heaters, on the other hand, are often quite a bit more expensive, and people who are not concerned about the safety of a ventless propane heater will claim that direct-vent heaters do not offer any real advantages. They are also a little more difficult to install.

It cannot be denied, though, that vented heaters do not put any pollutants or noxious fumes, like carbon monoxide, into your home. And since they draw air from outside, they also will not use any oxygen from your rooms.

Direct vent heaters offer the following advantages over ventless heaters:

  • They are safer – even if we understand that ventless heaters are considered safe, vented propane heaters are still better and cleaner in this regard.
  • Vented heaters work at higher elevations – up to, and even over, 10,000 feet (~3050 meters)
  • Vented heaters are legal and allowed for interior use in more places, including Canada and California

What size of propane wall heater do I need?

The question of how many BTUs you need can be a little confusing to answer.

Ideally, you would need to factor in not just the size of your space, but the number of people on average who occupy that space, their levels of activity, the amount of insulation as well as the room or home’s building materials, outside temperature and sun exposure and more. Confused yet?

To make it simple, our 2021 buyer’s guide to the best wall-mount propane heaters will break down the choices by three sizes:

  • Small Spaces – up to 350 square feet (approximately 33 square meters)
  • Medium Spaces – around 500 square feet (approximately 45 square meters)
  • Large Spaces – up to 1000 square feet (approximately 92 square meters)

If you live in an especially cold area, if your house is poorly ventilated or has little sun, or if you just like things warmer, you can move up to the next level on our guide and still enjoy efficient and cost-effective heating.

Just how efficient and cost-effective are propane wall heaters?

If you are wondering how much propane does a wall heater use, this too depends a great deal on the environment and usage, but in any case, the answer is pretty easy – very, very little.

A 10,000 BTU heater should run around 350 hours on a large tank (100 gallons), and customers report that even in fairly big spaces such a tank will last them for months – often through the whole winter.

Which is Better – Radiant or Convection Heat?

This is a question we really only need to concern ourselves with when considering smaller heaters and smaller spaces. In fact, in our list of best propane wall heaters for 2021, we only offer this option in our first division – Best Propane Wall Heaters for Small Spaces.

In that category, we offer two choices for ventless heaters – an infrared radiant heater, and a blue flame convection heater. The differences can be summarized thus:

  • Blue Flame – circulates warm air throughout the area (convection heating), thus heating the entire room. Better for larger spaces and for rooms with more activity like family rooms.
  • Infrared – radiates heat from an infrared element (radiant heating), thus directly heating people and objects closer to the heater, but usually not the whole room. Better for smaller spaces and for rooms with less activity like offices.

Blue flame can still be a great option for small spaces, though, especially if you want all of the space toasty warm. Infrared is great for an office or bedroom, especially where you may be close to, or in front of, the heater, and in that case, will make you even warmer than a blue flame propane heater.

For our other two categories –  Best Propane Wall Heaters for Medium-Sized Spaces and  Best Propane Wall Heaters for Large Spaces – we only recommend blue flame heaters.

What is the best wall mount propane heater for me?

Whichever propane wall heater you ultimately decide on, you will enjoy the most effective and efficient heating you can get, and a great way to give your furnace a break and start saving money on those heating bills.

How to Install a Propane Wall Heater

If you are wondering how hard it is to install a propane wall heater, it depends on what type of unit you are buying:

Ventless Propane Wall Heater – Requires less installation

  • Install mounting bracket onto the wall
  • Drill a small hole through the wall to run the hose for outdoor propane tank
  • Connect a gas hose to tank and heater, with correct flanges and approved regulator

Direct Vent Propane Wall Heater – Requires more installation

  • Install mounting bracket onto the wall
  • Cut a large hole through the wall to facilitate heater’s venting
  • Drill a small hole through the wall to run the hose for outdoor propane tank
  • Connect a gas hose to tank and heater, with correct flanges and approved regulator

This is, of course, not a guide for how to install a wall-mounted propane heater, just an outline of the basic steps.

Generally, these units simply plug into the wall with a standard 3-prong plug, so no additional wiring is required, and you won’t need the services of a qualified electrician.

Still, this is not a casual DIY project. If you are comfortable or experienced with not just drilling holes into your home’s interior walls (for the mounting bracket) but also cutting holes through the wall to the outside (for the vented heater’s venting, and for either kind of heater’s propane line) you may be fine with such a job.

If not, you can still purchase your unit through Amazon, but then you should consider contacting a local installer.

As far as how to hook up a propane tank to a wall heater, that part of it couldn’t be simpler. You do need a certified and approved regulator – we recommend the Mr. Heater Propane Low Pressure Regulator – and then with an easy connection kit like the Mr. Heater One-Stop Universal Gas-Appliance Hook-Up Kit you have the hose and all of the connectors you need.

Should I buy a propane wall heater for my home?

If you want better heating and like to save money, yes, you should definitely at least consider investing in a good quality propane wall heater.

They offer not only the best fuel and heating efficiency but also a much more efficient approach to heating single rooms or parts of your house than always running your main HVAC system. And they won’t just save you money – they will usually heat that room or space better than your furnace ever did.

And rest assured that we have done extensive homework and carefully reviewed many different heaters, and every single unit we recommend would be an excellent choice.

We hope you have enjoyed our guide – 7 Propane Wall Heaters That Will Make It Hot! (2021 Edition) – and we hope you stay warm all winter long!
