The Honeywell 9000 Wi-Fi Smart thermostat features a color touchscreen, which is customizable to match the décor in a specific room.

This wireless thermostat offers state of the art digital climate control, which can be programmed differently for each day of the week.

All common heating systems and furnaces can be controlled by the Honeywell 9000, and controlled via the internet and mobile devices.

Pros of the Honeywell 9000

  • Energy Efficient – The Honeywell 9000 comes with an energy-efficient program pre-installed, and this can be easily modified to match your own needs. It has a Smart Response System, which learns how long your particular heating system takes to heat and cool to a certain temperature. This means that there is less energy expenditure, and the Honeywell activates just when it is needed and not before. Furthermore, it has a holiday setting, which allows you to set maximum and minimum temperatures for your home during the vacation period.
  • Freedom of Control – Whilst the Nest formulates is its own programs, the Honeywell 9000 offers total control over the settings. You can change the program at any time using the Total Control mobile app, and check your thermostat on the go, no matter where you are. You can also use the Honeywell’s touchscreen to change your daily preferences directly at any time.
  • Compatible with Smart Devices –  The Honeywell 9000 is compatible with an impressive number of other smart devices, including Amazon Alexa, Google Home Wink, Simple Control, Apple Homekit, Samsung Smart Things, and Logitech harmony. The Nest, on the other hand, is only compatible with Amazon Alexa.

Cons of the Honeywell 9000

  • Complicated Set-Up – The setup of the Honeywell 9000 is not particularly complicated, but it certainly takes longer than with the Nest. With the Nest, all it requires is to be connected to the Wi-Fi and to download the Android or Apple App, then it can be controlled remotely. The Honeywell 9000 requires a connection to the home network, then registered before you can remote access the thermostat. This involves waiting for an activation email for ID and device codes. One this has been done, the Honeywell 9000 can be controlled with a mobile device.
  • No Learning Capacity – The Honeywell 9000 in a way is akin to a traditional thermostat, only it is digital and can be controlled remotely with mobile devices. Even though you can control the temperature in your home with a preset 7-day schedule, it doesn’t have the learning capacity of the Nest.
  • Restricted Use – The Honeywell 9000 can only connect to a single heating zone, so if you have more than one in your home, you will need additional devices. Additionally, your Honeywell 9000 smart thermostat can only be linked to one email address, so if there are multiple users, they will have to be able to access to same email address and password.

Now in its third generation, the Nest thermostat is groundbreaking, in that it does not require any programming. Instead, it has the ability to form its own programs based on the routines and behaviours in the home.

It does not feature a touchscreen, instead, the actions can be completed by turning the dial of the stylish circular unit.

The Nest is compatible with all heating and cooling systems, and the mobile app allows you to control the app on the go.

Advantages of the Nest

  • Energy SavingThe Nest has an added benefit over the Honeywell 9000, in that it can help you save energy, by recommending temperature settings, once it has learned your routines in the home. You will know when you have reached the right balance between energy efficiency and temperature when a green leaf appears on the screen. Additionally, the Nest has some further energy-saving measures, including switching off if no movement is detected for 2 hours in standby mode and providing you with energy usage reports on your energy efficiency.
  • Ability to Learn – Whilst the Honeywell 9000 has the conventional programmable on and off times, the Nest has the ability to learn. It can pick up on the routines of the home and then programs itself with the best on and off times for that routine. It can do this thanks to a motion sensor, which can also detect when routine changes, and program itself accordingly. For this ‘learning’ feature to be most effective, the nest should be placed in the room with the most use. With both the Nest and the Honeywell 9000, all programs can be overridden on the device directly, or remotely with a mobile device.
  • Stylish – Although the touchscreen of the Honeywell 9000 can be customized to match the décor of a room, the Nest has the sleeker the design. The black circular device has a certain style to it, plus it lights up when it detects someone in the room.

Negatives of the Nest

  • Location Dependent –  The motion sensor of the Nest means that its actions are very dependent on location, which is not such an issue with the Honeywell 9000. For example, if the Nest is located in the hallway, space where there is little movement, then it may switch to standby mode when you are home. This problem can be overcome with the addition of remote sensors that can link to the Nest and detect movement in other rooms of the home. However, this does add an extra expense to the cost of the Nest system overall.
  • Dropped Connection – Whilst the Honeywell 9000 seems to have a pretty solid connection to Wi-Fi, the Nest can drop the connection. The Nest can function without a Control wire, by powering the Wi-Fi from the excess in the D and G wire. However, the Wi-Fi connection can be dropped if there is insufficient power to access the heating system of your home. The Honeywell 9000 allows you to use a spare existing wire (or the G wire in the Control wire terminal) to ensure that the Wi-Fi connection does not drop.

Conclusion

Both the Honeywell 9000 and the Nest smart thermostats, would be a welcome addition to your home.

They both have the potential to save on your energy bills and, both provide great heating and cooling solutions for the home.

Furthermore, they both are compatible with a number of other smart home systems.

If you are looking for something that needs little programming and can adjust to the activity in your home then the Nest is probably the appropriate choice

However, if you are looking to have more control over the programming and the ease of a touchscreen, then the Honeywell 9000 may be the smart thermostat for you.

Lets did not forget that the price of these 2 thermostats is not cheap.
